reading order

The Discworld series might be best read by following the character arcs. While you can read them in publication order, diving into a sub-series is a more rewarding experience. Below are the main story arcs and standalone novels.

For a newcomer, it's often recommended to start with one of these books rather than the very first one:

# The City Watch

(Follows Commander Sam Vimes and the Ankh-Morpork City Watch in a series of fantasy police procedurals.)

# The Witches

(Follows the Lancre coven, primarily the formidable Granny Weatherwax, the jovial Nanny Ogg, and the thoughtful Magrat Garlick.)

# Rincewind & The Wizards

(Follows the comically inept and cowardly wizard Rincewind and the faculty of the Unseen University.)

# Death

(Follows Death, his granddaughter Susan Sto Helit, and their observations of humanity.)

# Tiffany Aching

(A young adult series about a young witch coming into her power. It's best read after some of the main Witches novels.)

# The Industrial Revolution / Moist von Lipwig

(Chronicles the technological and economic modernization of Ankh-Morpork through the eyes of conman-turned-civil-servant Moist von Lipwig.)

# Standalone Novels

(These books can be read at any point as they don't rely heavily on other character arcs.)
